The Journey Begins

During the holidays in 2006 we visited Brazil (my first return visit in 30 years).  Back in the United States, I began researching everything I could about subjects relating to quilting in Brazil.  I found that there was a small group of middle class women whom had discovered the joys of quilting.

Why Quilts?

Why quilts? Good question. Raw materials are available. Brazilian women are good sewers. Brazilians in general are very creative. Let's explore the creativity angle.

Brazilian women have a history of using fabric and sewing skills to bring beauty into their lives. There is a small but growing number of quilters in Brazil. The art form was originally brought to Brazil through European missionary wives. Now there are quilt clubs in several of the larger cities in southern Brazil. Quilt artist Myrian Melo designed and produced the first 2 quilts using a series of appliques to express her love for Brazilian flora and fauna.

But creativity has not stopped with Myrian's designs. As I travelled to the interior of the northeast and introduced sewing cooperatives to quilting, the women have embraced the art form enthusiastically. They are excited for the opportunity to introduce the world to their Brazil...a semi-arid land of blazing sun and exotic birds.

Patches of Brazil is honored to be a part of creating beautiful quilts and pillows which will reflect the many faces of this vast and exhuberant land.
